SIR means Self-Insured-Retention. It works similarly to the deductibles in other policies. It comes into effect when protection for certain losses is not afforded under the underlying policies, yet the umbrella does not specifically exclude such a loss. In that case, the SIR is responsibility of the insured before RLI will pay out any amount. SIR is $500 everywhere except in TX where it is $1,000.
